PREPARING FOR SURGERY
The Night Before and Morning Of
To ensure a safe anaesthetic:
- Please withhold food from 8:00pm the night before surgery
- Water is fine overnight, but should be removed by 7:00am on the day of surgery
- Allow your pet to go to the toilet before coming in
We understand skipping breakfast might make your pet a little cranky — but it’s for their safety!
ADMISSION PROCESS
Please bring your pet to the clinic between 8:00am and 9:00am on the day of surgery. This allows us time to:
- Check your pet’s details and weight
- Complete consent forms
- Begin pre-surgical preparation
The check-in process typically takes around 10-15 minutes. Our team will be there to answer any questions and make you (and your pet) feel at ease.
POST-OPERATIVE CARE
Helping Your Pet Heal Comfortably
After surgery, your pet may have stitches or staples that will need to be removed 7-14 days post-op, depending on the procedure. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment and advise on the best time for removal.
To protect the surgical site, we recommend using an Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent licking or chewing. It may look awkward, but it’s essential for proper healing. If you do take it off, keep a close eye — it only takes seconds for stitches to be undone!
If your pet removes their stitches or the wound reopens, please call us immediately so we can provide prompt care.
When to Contact the Clinic
You know your pet best. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reach out. Warning signs may include:
- Unusual tiredness or vomiting
- Redness, swelling or discharge at the surgical site
- Bad odour from the wound
- Persistent licking or discomfort
If you notice any of these symptoms, give us a call or drop in — we’re here to help.
